Common Questions About Home Remodeling in South Florida

Whether you're planning a full kitchen remodel or updating your home's finishes, Ediss Construction is here to provide clarity and confidence. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions by our clients.

  • How long does a kitchen remodeling project typically take from start to finish?

At the risk of sounding elusive, we must say that it depends. The scope of your kitchen remodeling project dictates the timeline. For example, removing or adding walls—a popular trend to create open kitchens—requires building permits and adds time to the project. On average, a full kitchen remodel may take up to 90 days to complete, including planning, permitting, and construction.

  • Can I buy the remodeling products from you?

Yes. As a full-service remodeling firm, we can design, source, and supply all the materials needed for your project. Many clients find this convenient. However, you're not obligated to buy from us. You're welcome to shop around if you prefer. We support whichever route offers the best fit for your style and budget.

  • Is re-facing cabinets a good solution when your budget is tight?

Re-facing can be less expensive than replacing cabinets, but it's not always ideal. Re-facing involves replacing cabinet doors and drawer fronts and covering the frame's face with veneer or laminate. If not applied perfectly, these materials can peel, shift, or show visible seams over time.

Considering that 70% of cabinet costs lie in the doors and hardware, many homeowners find that full cabinet replacement offers better long-term value, style flexibility, and durability—especially when the price difference is relatively small.

  • Is it a good idea to install wood flooring in the kitchen?

While wood flooring is a popular aesthetic choice, it’s not always the most practical option for kitchens. Kitchens are high-traffic areas prone to water spills, which can cause damage to wood over time. If you're connecting the kitchen to an adjacent area with wood flooring, continuing the wood look may be worth it visually. However, tile or waterproof LVP flooring is often preferred for its durability and resistance to moisture.

  • I have a “popcorn” ceiling. Is it possible to make it smooth? Is it a good idea?

Yes, popcorn ceilings can be smoothed out, and it’s a popular upgrade. There are two primary methods:

    1. Scraping and Skim Coating: More labor-intensive but preserves ceiling height.
    2. Framing and Sheetrocking: Faster and allows room to run wiring (for lights or speakers), but it reduces ceiling height by a few inches.

Popcorn ceilings were common in the 70s and 80s to hide imperfections in concrete slab ceilings. Smoothing them out improves the look of your home and opens design possibilities like ceiling lighting, which can be difficult to install in slab ceilings.
